About Us – Dementia Direct

Welcome to Dementia Direct.

Our journey began from a place of personal understanding and a deep empathy for the profound effects dementia can have on individuals and their families.

The inspiration for Dementia Direct is rooted in the experiences of our own family members, who bravely faced the challenges of living with dementia.

Our first experience with dementia occurred when my father was diagnosed with Vascular dementia, a prevalent type resulting from decreased blood flow to the brain, commonly following a stroke or mini-strokes. This condition results in challenges with memory, reasoning, and planning, and its severity depends on which areas of the brain are affected.

My father, Joe, led an extraordinary life as a renowned professional wrestler, gaining fame during Kent Walton’s era of Saturday afternoon TV wrestling. He was also a film stuntman, contributing to numerous TV series like “The Saint”, “The Sweeney”, “The Avengers”, and films including “The Dirty Dozen”, “You Only Live Twice”, “The File of the Golden Goose”, “Oliver”, among others.

His greatest accomplishment in the film industry came in 1970 when he portrayed Trog opposite Joan Crawford. Significantly, he starred alongside Joan Crawford in “Trog”, where he indeed played the character of Trog.

Joe, a keen sports enthusiast, maintained outstanding physical health throughout his life. Nonetheless, we suspect that his dynamic career, the physical demands of his time in the ring, and the impacts endured as a stuntman, along with age-related factors, played a role in the onset of his dementia.

Joe was lucky to spend much of his later years in an “extra care” housing scheme in Brighton, tailored for individuals with dementia to live as independently as possible. His cosy flat was part of a communal building that offered shared spaces for socialising, fostering a sense of belonging. The staff’s commitment and the regular visits from carers greatly enriched his life. Although our family was dispersed worldwide, Joe found companionship, forged close friendships, and greatly valued the fantastic carers who surrounded him.

This reflection brought about an important idea: we could use different tools and products to help trigger memories and make everyday life better for people with dementia. This was the motivation for starting Dementia Direct.
