Fireworks are a staple of celebrations such as Bonfire Night, Diwali, and New Year’s Eve. However, the intense noise can be disorienting or frightening for individuals with dementia, sometimes evoking distressing memories.
Below are five suggestions to help someone with dementia feel secure and calm during festive occasions with fireworks.
- Plan Ahead – In preparation for fireworks night, gently inform the individual with dementia that the event is approaching. This can help you understand their feelings towards the event and their desired level of participation. It’s also helpful to discuss plans with your neighbours.
- Attend a Professional Event – Community firework displays can be enjoyable for the entire family. Should you choose to attend one, opt for events that are managed by professionals. Look out for displays that might offer a quieter experience.
- Stay Comfortable – It’s important to create a snug and serene setting. This might involve making sure there aren’t excessive crowds or too much going on around the person. Suggest putting on multiple layers of clothing and having warm beverages available to maintain comfort.
- Create an Alternative Fireworks Evening – If attending a public display isn’t suitable, consider other ways to celebrate. Organising a Bonfire Night-themed meal, using sparklers in your garden, or viewing fireworks from the safety of home are all viable alternatives.
- Opt Out of Fireworks – Acknowledge that fireworks don’t appeal to everyone, and that is perfectly acceptable. If the noise or bright lights are overwhelming for the person with dementia, plan different activities that they can enjoy in a more tranquil environment.
